AC squealing or whining: indoors and outdoors are different

By the HeatAndAirCost editors · Last updated October 5, 2026 · How we research prices

What people commonly report

A squeal, whine or whistle that was not there last season. Some people hear it at the outdoor unit when it starts. Others hear it inside at the air handler or furnace whenever the fan runs. Trane files these under high-pitched noises and gives different lists for each location[1].

What Trane says can cause a high-pitched noise

Outdoor unit

“Something simple like a loose screw,” or the fan motor, the capacitor, or the compressor. Trane’s instruction is to turn the unit off to avoid damage and call for HVAC service[1].

Indoor unit (furnace or air handler)

A valve, the inducer motor, or “a dirty or too-restrictive filter”[1]. A rattle with vibration is a separate Trane category, covering the blower wheel, a fan or fan motor, the compressor, or a loose screw or bolt[1].

What keeps moving parts quiet

ENERGY STAR’s tune-up checklist includes lubricating moving parts, because “parts that lack lubrication cause friction in motors and increases the amount of electricity you use,” and cleaning and adjusting blower components; it says airflow problems can cut efficiency by up to 15 percent[2].

How to find out more

  1. Indoors, try Trane’s filter test. “If you remove the filter and the noise stops, change the filter. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, call for repairs”[1].
  2. Outdoors, look without reaching in. With the power off at the disconnect or breaker, check for sticks or leaves against the fan. DOE’s maintenance advice is to clean debris and leaves from the fan, compressor and condenser on a split system[3].
  3. Note the timing: only at startup, constant, or getting worse.

Try this while you wait

A replacement filter is what Trane's indoor test calls for. The fan is for the hours the outdoor unit stays off while you wait for service.

When to stop and call

  • The outdoor unit squeals: turn it off and call, per Trane[1].
  • The indoor squeal continues with a new filter.
  • The noise comes with a burning smell, a rattle, or loss of cooling.

Finding a qualified technician

We do not inspect systems, rate contractors, or recommend any particular company. Whoever you call, ask for the license number and look it up on your state or county licensing board’s public site before work starts. Refrigerant work also requires an EPA Section 608 certified technician. Our contractor hiring checklist covers licenses, insurance, written quotes and red flags.

AC squealing noise: FAQs

Why is my AC unit squealing?

Trane says a high-pitched noise from the outdoor unit can be as simple as a loose screw, but can also come from the fan motor, the capacitor or the compressor. Indoors, at a furnace or air handler, it lists a valve, the inducer motor, or a dirty or too-restrictive filter.

Can I keep running an AC that squeals?

For a high-pitched outdoor unit, Trane's instruction is to turn the unit off to avoid damage and call for service. More broadly, Trane says to shut off any normally quiet unit that suddenly gets loud.

Can a dirty filter cause a squeal?

Trane says a dirty or too-restrictive filter can cause a high-pitched sound at the furnace. Its test: remove the filter, and if the noise stops, change the filter. If a new filter does not fix it, call for repair.

Does maintenance help prevent squealing?

ENERGY STAR's tune-up checklist includes lubricating moving parts, noting that parts without lubrication cause friction in motors and increase electricity use, plus cleaning and adjusting blower components to keep airflow right.
